Adding Fish To Your Aquarium
Choosing the right fish
Pick fish that suit your tank's size and your water conditions, and make sure everyone gets along. Check each species' adult size, temperament, and preferred swimming zone — peaceful community fish, boisterous cichlids, and delicate shrimp don't always mix. Understock rather than overstock: a lightly populated tank stays cleaner, more stable, and healthier. When in doubt, add fish in small batches so your filter can keep up.
Adding fish safely (acclimatization)
Never just pour new fish straight in. Float the sealed bag in your tank for 15–20 minutes so the temperature equalises, then gradually mix small amounts of your tank water into the bag over the next 20–40 minutes to let the fish adjust to your water chemistry. Gently net the fish into the tank and discard the bag water rather than adding it. Dim the lights, keep the tank calm, and skip feeding for the first day to reduce stress — quarantining new arrivals separately for a couple of weeks is the safest habit of all.
Keeping them healthy: feeding & maintenance
Feed small amounts once or twice a day — only what your fish finish in a couple of minutes — and vary the diet for balanced nutrition. Uneaten food fouls the water, so less is usually more. Stay on top of maintenance with a weekly 20–30% water change, rinse filter media in old tank water (never tap water, which kills the beneficial bacteria), and test regularly for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. Watch your fish daily: clamped fins, loss of appetite, or unusual spots are early warnings to act on quickly.
